IT CAME FROM OUT THAR . . .
Very Interesting and Recommended Reading. THE METEORITE… Arkham and the surrounding areas were NEVER the same ! The plants changed… people changed…(pg. 25); “Almost at the same time the mortality among the livestock commenced. Poultry turned greyish and died…Hogs grew inordinately fat … loathsome changes which no one could explain.” EVERYTHING WAS DYING…. ‘CUZE THAT DURN METEORITE …!!Then People started to just DISAPPEAR without a trace (pg. 27), or did they? This is one really strange tale!! Not the quality of writing found in Lovecraft’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, but definitely a Recommended Book!

Heir of mystery, touch of boredom
The color out of space is a fascinating tale, intrigue surrounding a foreign body, in this case a meteor were born of stories like this, its important to remember the context. Ol’ H.P found majesty in the ambiance of nature, and that true horrors lay in cities, mass accumulation of life, specifically human life, is what draws the horror in, how people accept or deny the horror before them. That is Lovecraft in his elementBeing one of his earliest works. The scares and terror here take a back seat to the goings on of a small town, facing a pivotal point in its struggling harvest, without going to much into plot beats; what you are, as the audience, is an observer listening in to the impact of this foreign entity and its implied power over the folk. Slow burns, phenomenal prose, and a very purposeful execution found often in H.Ps’ works. Force you, the reader, to settle into your own thoughts, really driving this story where few recent or modern’ iterations of the tale on the screen or page really achieve the same effect. Why not a five? My preference for the macabre and terrifying lies in the form of a ‘show me, dont tell me’. I appreciate facing the horror, its embodiment beyond some artifact. For that drives its relateability as a force. People, their nature, no matter how alien are of course the greatest monsters. Now, while I found this story digestible, visually (in the sense of written imagery) stunning, and we’ll communicated I couldn’t help but shake something else was coming, something beyond. This is intentional but is a subjective preference. For anyone who looks up at the sky and feels millions of ageless, endless eyes peering back at them disguised as stars. Give color out of space a chance… you may find darkness behind its rainbow or peace in the soft and endless pain it may provide.Grab a warm drink, cozy blanket and knock this read out in about 90 minutes. It’s a great time and an incredible peice of horror in written form to date imo.

    Colour me delighted
This is a prime example of why HPL is a master of the macabre. In just a few words, he paints such a vivid scene you can easily picture it with your mind’s eye. The horror builds slowly, almost unnoticed until the climax.HPL’s style of writing has been copied, or at least attempted, by many authors; with varying degrees of success. This tale has spawned at least two other stories. One is almost a sequel, “The Colour Out of Time” by Michael Shea which is a pretty decent read. “The Colour Out of Darkness” by John Pelan is the other. That one I haven’t read. From its review, it is a poor pastiche.

    Colorful, mysterious but unsatisfied
Maybe it’s just that I had consumed so much cosmic horror that this level of narrative isn’t quite satisfied for me.I think of Annihilation all the time i read it.

    Creepy!
This is chilling tale that shook me to the bone. That hasn’t happened to me since I read “The Crime & the Glory of Commander Suzdal” by Cordwainer Smith.

Bought as a secret Santa present and they loved it!The book is thinner than I expected but that shouldn’t stop you from getting it. Though smaller still so good and I recommend to all readers out there!

I was inspired to read by the film. This is only a review of the first short story, I still need to read more. It is so good, and the fact that he died virtually unknown is tragic and seriously unfair. His writing style is amazing. This book introduces a concept that definitely inspired a lot of the horror films/books today. I don’t think creatures like “It” would exist without this and his other works.P.S. The book smells really nice. Is that weird?

Written close to a hundred years ago by H. P. Lovecraft I first read this timeless tale in a book of Sci-Fi short stories whilst staying at a friends place more than 30 years ago. The haunting memory stayed in my mind all those years like a ghost in the attic until I was able to find and download it to my Kindle. A real gem and an essential read for any Sci-Fi fan.

Book was far larger then what I was expecting, I guess it’s good if you’re half blind. I loved the story and the soft cover is pretty durable.
