I cannot express how much I absolutely LOVE this grocery basket set! No, the food products are not made of wood. However, they are made of a strong durable cardboard that has lasted through heavy excessive use of my three and six year old. The cans have a plastic top that is removable to enhance imaginative play. The basket itself is made of metal and is a good strong quality basket. Realistically your child could bring it to the actual grocery store to use if you are making a quick trip there for a few small items.Overall, my kids absolutely love playing with this in their play kitchen. It has really upped their imaginative play as they can pretend to grocery shop then take the items home to cook. I highly recommend it!

Bought two sets for my grandsons (ages 2 & 3) to go with the Melissa & Doug Grocery Store ~ They love putting items in the steel baskets, and not just the groceries ~ They carry around cars, figures, stuffed animals, etc ~ The only downside to the baskets are that they are not stackable ~ The lids on the canned products are easy to take off and put back on ~ Boxes are good size, but are just made of heavy cardboard, so I’m not sure how long they will last ~ Great play toy for both boys and girls alike!

I ordered this thinking that it would be wooden like most other Melissa and Doug products. The basket is cute, but I basically paid good money for cardboard boxes. Had I known that, I would have just used empty cereal boxes. Boo.
